Poldowski was born Irène Régine Wieniawska in Brussels, May 16, 1879. At the age of 22, she married British Baronet Sir Aubrey Dean Paul. She published, first in France and later in England, under the pseudonym "Poldowski" (an obvious combination of her husband's and her father's last names). In her songwriting, Poldowski adheres to basic principles, long-established in the German tradition, requiring that the music preserve the natural flow and inflection of the spoken language, that it illuminate the meaning of the text, and that the piano be an expressive partner, equal with the voice. That much is expected. It is usual in any well-written song, to find interdependence in the two parts, mood colour in the piano motives and harmonies, as well as sensitive handling of declamation and melody. Beyond that, Poldowski proves again and again that she is an artist of the highest order through attention to the details of expression.

Years after switching from the violin to the viola, British virtuoso Lionel Tertis (1876-1975) recalled, "Everybody seemed to be up in arms at my daring to play solos on the viola. They declared it was never meant to be, and never could be a solo instrument. I was made to feel almost that I was doing something criminal." Thanks to an obstinate group of performers and composers who shared Tertis's determination, the viola came into its own during the twentieth century. This recording is a stunning collaboration between two renowned chamber musicians.

This recording consists of transcriptions for flute and piano of music originally written for various instruments and groupings. Bruce Vogt writes: "Ultimately transcription as always had a simple and important function for performers: it has allowed them to play things they otherwise could not. This recording is very much undertaken in the spirit of this gloriously self-serving tradition. All in all, a good measure of success of any transcription is the extent to which it achieves a sense of naturalness with the instruments involved, both individually and in combination." As a duo, Lanny Pollet and Bruce Vogt have been performing and touring together for over ten years, playing music ranging from contemporary and standard repertoire to their own transcriptions.
