Faculty Concert Series
Bruce Vogt, piano
Anne Grimm, soprano
With guest, Patricia Kostek, clarinet

Bruce Vogt and Anne Grimm present a program centred on a collection of French settings for piano and soprano, including two of Debussy’s greatest sets: Chansons de Bilitis, from a well-known series of erotic poems written by Pierre Louÿs, and a setting of Paul Verlaine’s poems Fêtes galantes. The concert will conclude with five songs of the great chansonnier Jacques Brel. Guest clarinetist Patricia Kostek will join for three John McCabe folk songs plus a setting of Michael Head’s poem, The World Is Mad, a title apropos to our troubled present times.

Among the elite of Canadian pianists, Bruce Vogt is a unique and dynamic performer. He appears regularly in concert within Canada, but has also inspired audiences in England, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Norway, Bulgaria, China, and Japan.

Soprano Anne Grimm is an internationally recognized performer, specializing in early music and baroque repertoire. She has appeared extensively in Europe and North America with companies such as the Nationales Riesopera, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra; the Bethlehem Bach Choir and the Tanglewood Festival in the US; and the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Taflemusik here in Canada among others. Alongside her performance schedule, she has also recorded for Erato, Harmonia Mundi, NM Classics, Vanguard Classics, Troubadisc and Sony.

Clarinetist Patricia Kostek has a distinguished career as recitalist and symphony orchestra musician and is Professor Emeritus at the UVic School of Music. She has given recitals and masterclasses, and served as competition jury member in major cultural centers of Europe, Asia, Canada, the USA, Mexico and South America. An active recording studio musician, she has performed on the soundtracks of dozens of television and Hollywood motion picture scores as well as video games.
